An Engaging, historic setting.

Westwood was developed in 1919 on the 3,000-acre ‘Wolfskill Ranch’, owned by Arthur Letts, founder Southern California’s Broadway and Bullock’s department stores. After Lett’s death, his son in law, Harold Janss, vice president of Janss Investment Company, inherited the land and developed it during the 1920s.

Today Westwood is celebrated for both its commercial and residential neighborhood, many of which are enclaves with a distinct hyper-local flavor. With strong neighborhood involvement in enhancing its vibrancy, Westwood Village is sure to remain a favorite destination in West Lost Angeles.

Westwood Village

The History

Westwood Village has one of the nation’s oldest on-street shopping, dining and entertainment districts – one that takes advantage of southern California’s beautiful temperate climate. Opened in the 1920s – the second such district ever to be built in the nation’s history – the district was planned and built by Janss Investment Company, a family-run, Los Angeles–based real estate development company that operated from 1895 to 1995. The firm’s “stamps” appear on sidewalks in many Westside residential neighborhoods. It was the Westside’s busiest such district through much of the 20th century.

Westwood Village Farmers’ Market

In addition to being a direct source to local farmers and food artisans, the market is a community hub.
